“Poetry awakens our senses, connects us with ourselves and others, and leads us to think in synthesising ways, as required by its use of the language of metaphor.”

Poetry Module

Home by Dixon Grove Grade 8 students

Home is brown couches and coloured walls...

beautiful paintings reflect a scene from a lifetime past.

Black and white piano keys play the songs of my memories.

Home is the warm smell of vanilla, and chicken soup,

fried rice, chicken biryani and roti…

The poetry module is the first phase of the program and invites young people to explore the project theme through written word.

The poetry mentor works with the students for up to 6 classes (depending on the school schedule) and uses learning methods that include:

  • Free flow writing

  • 8 word bios

  • Object writing

  • Poetry soup

  • One word poetry

  • Finish the sentence

  • Spoken word

Students practice presenting their poetry individually, as choral pieces, spoken word performance and in partners or small groups.

All and/or parts of the student poetry are developed as lyrics for the original music compositions in the music module.
